Colton’s Rimrock Road project nearly complete

The Rimrock Road project in Colton is complete, except for the sidewalk which is to come in the spring.

“It’s in full use,” said Colton mayor Jerry Weber. “People were kind of driving up it before it was quite done. So it’s open.”

The sidewalk will be the last piece on the bypass path which connects Highway 195 to Rimrock Road, allowing heavy farm trucks and other traffic to get to the highway without driving next to the school.

“Just waiting on the weather to put in the sidewalks,” said Weber. “The pavement is down, lights are up, curbs are in, the stop sign is up, and we’ve heard nothing but good comments from people around town.”

Both sides of the new road (an extension of the existing Rimrock Road) are zoned as commercial while the east side is owned by the Heitstuman family, who farms the land. The school owns the west side.

Weber said that the land on the east side may be developed in the future, although the city is removed from any deal that might be made.

“We have the hope that somebody will want to (develop there), but it’s not our land for sale,” Weber said.

The ground claimed by the new street was donated, by the school district and the Heitstuman family.

Crey Construction of Lewiston broke ground for the project in September 2012.

Because the bids came back low for the $680,000 budget, contractors were able to expand the original plans, completing all of McKinley Street, widening it and adding a curb and sidewalk past the school.

McKinley Street runs past the school, connecting at Rimrock Road.
