LaCrosse family loses home to fire

The Sam Peck family lost their home and most of their belongings in an early morning fire last week.

LaCrosse firefighters were called to a blaze about 3 a.m. Friday morning at the home at milepost 100 about two miles from of Pampa Pond.

Peck said his seven-month-old boy started crying and woke up his wife. When she saw the fire, she woke Peck up and the family escaped from the house.

Firefighters arrived within 20 minutes of their phone call, Peck said.

Eric Startin, a volunteer firefighter with Rural Fire District 8, said the fire apparently started near the chimney, and the house was a total loss.

He said the family also lost most of their belongings, but did salvage some clothing and some photographs. Everything else was either smoke or water damaged, he said.

Peck said the family is staying with friends. He said the Red Cross assisted them and an account has been set up for the family at the LaCrosse branch of Sterling Bank.

He also said he doesn’t know if the family will rebuild the home.

Diamond, Colfax and Washtucna fire departments were asked to deliver water to the scene later in the morning.
