Serving Whitman County since 1877
Monday was an important day in LaCrosse. The LaCrosse Market was reborn.
The town’s previous market closed a few years ago. Little hope for getting a new store existed. The situation was grim. A small, isolated town cannot long survive without a place to get the basics of everyday life.
Townspeople and many from the surrounding area responded. This was important—too important to ignore.
LaCrosse Community Pride, a group of locals, brought together a variety of talents and resources. Area residents helped as they could. Some made great sacrifices of time and money. Public funding was rounded up.
Gradually, the vision came together. Remodeling on the store was started, but, in the meantime, the town’s only bank and coffee shop closed.
The town bought the bank building, and a new bank branch opened. An operator for the new store was found, and new proprietors are currently getting the restaurant ready for its own grand re-opening.
LaCrosse’s string of grand re-openings with more to come is a true wonder. They have opened a lot of eyes as to what is possible in a small town.
