Obituary - Hugh Henderson

Hugh Calvin Henderson, 97, of Clovis, Calif., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Golden Cross Health Care in Clovis.

He was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Tyler, Texas, to Luther and Sarah Henderson. Calvin married Evelyn Maxine Cantwell in Ellinwood, Kan., on Dec. 5, 1936. The couple celebrated their 76th anniversary earlier this month.

In 1938, the couple moved to Holden, Wash., a mining community in the central Cascades that was accessible only by ferry on Lake Chelan. Calvin worked in the mine’s mill. The couple’s three sons were born in Wenatchee while Calvin worked for the mine.

Calvin worked for the Fuller Brush Co. in Montana and eastern Washington until the mid-1960s. They lived in Steptoe in 1946, and in Colfax from 1949 to 1959.

Calvin and Evelyn moved to Oklahoma to care for Calvin’s mother and other relatives. They settled in Tonkawa, where they lived for 35 years. They moved to Clovis in 2001.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Clovis; three sons, Ferral and wife Mary Lou of Fresno, Neil and wife Maria of Oceanside, Don and wife Dolly of Pueblo West, Colo .; 14 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at Peoples Church in Fresno, Calif., Dec. 17, 2012. His youngest son, Pastor Don Henderson, conducted the services.
