Two Colfax wrestlers made the finals of the Springdale wrestling tournament Saturday, Jan. 12.
Thomas Newton of St. John placed second in the 138-pound class. In the 120-pound weight class, Mitch Barney – who took second in state last year – lost in overtime to Liberty’s Kain Feltwell, who scored a two-point takedown to win the match.
“If Mitch continues to work hard and maintain his health, he should do well at districts in February,” said Colfax Coach Dennis Gransbery.
In the 138-pound class final match, Thomas Newton was pinned in the first round by Newport’s Austin Krogh.
“Thomas was wrestling well until he was thrown to his back,” said Gransbery. “He has not lost to anyone in the B division and is expected to do well at Districts.”
In other results, Evan Lord competed at 182 pounds and finished with a 2-2 record.
In the 132-pound bracket, Reggie Jones also won two and lost two.
Freshman Tyson Rogers lost two matches at 120 pounds.
“Tyson is doing well as a freshman but is in a tough weight class,” said Gransbery. “Practicing against Mitch Barney every day has improved his wrestling and should help him in the future.”
Josh Miller missed the 160-pound weight class by .2 pounds which sent him into the 170-pound class where he lost two matches.
The Colfax team will compete next at Davenport today, Thursday, and at Kittatas on Saturday for a 17-team tournament.
Colfax has seven wrestlers now on the injured list, including Brandon Arneston (152), Dalton McNeilly (145), Brendan Lord (170), Brian DeYoung (170), Aaron Arneston (220), Ray Compton (195) and Nick McAdams (220).
“We hope to have more wrestlers off the injury list and on the mats by Friday,” said Gransbery.
The Colfax team includes one St. John wrestler and one from Gar-Pal.
