Snappy defense keys 12-2 league wrap for Colfax girls

With a steady stress on defense, Colfax girls booked wins in their last two league rounds for a solid number-two finish in the NE girls standings.

Colfax sophomore Amara Huber stretches to keep the ball in play against the Chargers.

As the number-two finisher, the Bulldog girls were booked to play seventh-place Davenport Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the District 7 playoffs at Mt. Spokane High School.

Coach Corey Baerlocher, who Friday marked his 250th win for 11 years of coaching the Bulldogs, noted the goal now for the Bulldog girls is to get back to the state 2B finals.

The district playoff, which will mark title night Saturday, will trim the NE playoff entry down to five teams which will head south the following week to play SE District nine qualifiers in a sub-regional round.

Reardan, the defending state champions, wrapped up a 14-0 run in the league to get the top entry card for the NE. Lone loss overall for the Indians was to Brewster in a non-leaguer.

Colfax started the playoff at 12-2 with the two losses to Reardan. The four winners of Wednesday’s opening rounds will match up Friday in the semi-finals. The Colfax-Davenport winner will go up against the NWC-LRS winner.

Kori Goodwin, left, and Brooklyn Schmidt put a baseline trap on Taylor Smith of the Chargers in the last home game.

Colfax Saturday ended the home court season with a 57-30 win over Springdale, the fifth-place NE team who arrived in Colfax with a 6-7 record. The Bulldogs ripped a 24-7 first quarter score and made it stick for the duration

Amelie Bruya capped her seniors’ night recognition by hitting four three-point shots and finishing with 18 points. Rachel Robinson and Bekah Kraut are the other Colfax seniors.

Brittney Beckman and Emily Sulgrove each hit eight points to lead the Chargers.

Colfax came home Saturday after a double-up win at Ritzville, 42-21 on the Broncos court. Colfax defense held the Broncos to just 11 points over the first two quarters. Brooke Pichette and Jana Bennett each hit five points to top scoring for the hosts.

Colfax had 15 steals and LRS committed 21 turnovers against the stingy Colfax defense. Colfax also banked 10 more points on the lead with a 12-16 mark on the toss line compared to a glum 2-10 for the hosts.
