Six Colfax wrestlers advance to regionals

The Colfax High School wrestling team sent eight contenders to the District tournament in Davenport and six will advance to this weekend’s Regional Tournament at Reardan.

Trapper Askins, wrestling on the Colfax team for Gar-Pal High School, works his way to a district title in the 120-pound weight class.

Wrestling Feb. 2, Trapper Askins took first-place at 120-pounds while Thomas Newton took second at 138 pounds.

At 113 pounds, Mitch Barney placed second. Evan Lord finished third at 182 pounds while Ray Compton took third in the 195-pound class.

Tyson Rogers claimed fourth place at 120 pounds.

Reggie Jones also finished fourth, in the 132-pound class. Dalton McNeilly finished fifth in the 145-pound class.

At 160, Kevin Knauff reached the five-match per day limitation deemed by the WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association), which means he will wrestle the third-fourth place match as a preliminary round of the regional tournament Friday.

In the 170-pound bracket, Brian DeYoung finished in eighth place.

“Brian wrestled well but will not advance to Regional,” said Colfax Coach Dennis Gransbery. “As a freshman, his weight class was made up of mainly seniors and juniors which had a little more experience than Brian. If he works hard next year, I have no doubt he’ll advance to regionals next year.”

At 160 pounds, Josh Miller did not place.

Overall, the top six wrestlers in each weight bracket advanced to the Regional tournament. From there, the top five in each class make it to the state tournament at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 15-16.
