These reports are from the previous four issues of the Daily Bulletin in Colfax. They are reprinted here for the benefit of Gazette readers who reside outside of Colfax. Some accounts have been updated.

Benefit set for Anderson family

A spaghetti dinner and silent auction in memory of Brandon Anderson, who suddenly passed away Jan. 31, is scheduled for Friday, March 8, at the Pullman Moose Lodge, SE 150 Kamiaken.

Dinner is $7 per person. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the dinner served from 6 to 7 p.m. A silent auction will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Anderson is the son of Rick and Debi Anderson of Colfax. He left his wife, Jessica, and two children, Aiden and Aubrey. All proceeds go to his wife and two children.

COLFAX HOOP SITE CHANGE

Officials of this weekend’s sub-regional basketball rounds have made location changes to put both Colfax games Friday at the same site, the Dietrich Dome at Walla Walla Community College. Colfax girls will play Reardan at 6 p.m. and Colfax boys will play Northwest Christian at 7:30. The site change means Bulldogs fans will not have to scramble between the two sites of the consecutive games.

Cargo container falls onto 195

At 2:30 p.m. on Friday, a little more than seven miles south of St. John, Mario Gonzales Jr., of Moses Lake, was driving a 2003 Freightliner tractor-trailer northbound when the cargo container he was hauling slid off the trailer into the northbound lane of travel. No injuries were reported.

CONCRETE RIVER FEST TO RETURN

Organizers are planning to revive the Concrete River Festival set for July 26-28.

Volunteers met last Thursday night to discuss activities, recruiting more volunteers and getting sponsors for events during the festival.

Among the activities planned for the festival are a car show, carnival, parade, concerts, a roller derby and fun run. A mural also will be unveiled some time during the festival.

The next meeting is March 14 at the city council chambers.

The Concrete River Festival, which was organized by the Chamber of Commerce, served as the Colfax summer event for many years. It was later supplanted by Hullabaloo which is conducted in October.

TOYOTA HITS GUARDRAIL

Christina Nguyen, Vancouver, was unhurt last Thursday afternoon after the 1995 Toyota Corolla she was driving went out of control and struck a guardrail on Highway 26 near Dusty. According to the Washington State Patrol report, she was driving westbound at 3:08 p.m. when she crossed the centerline rumble strips and over-corrected. The car went off the roadway to the right and struck the guardrail.

CHS FBLA MEMBERS QUALIFY FOR STATE

CHS FBLA students had four second place finishes, two third place and two fourth places, and two fifth place finishes at FBLA Regional on Feb. 7.

Future Business Leader members traveled to Spokane for competition. Ysabeaux Ng placed second in Creed and second in Impromptu; Emma Gingerich and Deanna Aeschliman placed third in Business Presentation; Nick Johnson and Clara Higginson placed second in Marketing; Nick Johnson and Kurt Moore placed fourth in Global Business; Hollis Higginson placed fifth in Creed and Ryan Christopherson placed fifth in Economics.

All of these students advance to state competition.

AG MECHANICS CLASS PLACES FIRST

On Feb. 6 at the Ag Mechanic competition, the Colfax FFA team placed first with Brian Scholz placing first as an individual.

PICKUP HITS MOTORHOME

On Feb. 6 at 5:40 a.m., the Washington State Patrol reported that Maria V. Dickson of Garfield was driving a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup southbound on State Route 27 within the Palouse city limits when she lost control on the ice-covered highway, slid off to the right and struck a parked 1978 Monarc motorhome, belonging to Steve B. Chertudi of Palouse. She was not hurt.

CHS SINGERS EARN ‘SUPERIORS’

Lindsay Webber, Katie Largent and Erica Eng received superior ratings and first place awards at the SEWMEA solo-ensemble contest Feb. 2 in Pullman.

They each qualified for state solo-ensemble in solo singing. Lindsay and Katie also qualified with their duet. State solo-ensemble will be held at CWU in April.

VARIETY TALENT SOUGHT

The CHS Choir’s annual Talent & Variety Show will be Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The choir is looking for piano players, dancers, instrumental and vocal numbers. Anyone, any age, can be part of the show. Contact Cary Cammack at JES by Feb. 15 to sign up.

COMPETENCY CHECK ORDERED

Superior Court Judge David Frazier filed an order for a competency evaluation for Brian Wayne Allery, 46, Pullman.

Allery was booked into jail in October 2012 on probable charges of theft, identification theft and resisting arrest. He became a suspect after charging items valued at more than $2,500 at Walmart in Pullman. Allery was identified with the use of surveillance video recordings at Walmart.

The order, filed Feb. 5, states that serious questions exist as to the defendant’s competency to understand the proceedings and to assist his attorney in his defense.

A review hearing was ordered for March 8.

Allery remains in custody to assure abstinence from unprescribed drugs and the effect drugs have on his use of prescribed medications.

COLFAX BURGLARY TRIAL DELAYED

The trial for Vance E. Mey, who has been charged with burglarizing the Thrifty Grandmothers, Daily Grind and an apartment along Main Street Colfax, has been delayed to allow his attorney additional time to prepare and negotiate for a possible resolution. The postponement order was filed Feb. 5.
