Library welcomes DVD, book donations

Whitman County Library welcomes donations of lightly used DVDs, newer books in good condition or historic books. Donated items benefit the library system in a number of ways.

Last year, the library was able to expand the cataloged materials collection with 661 donated items that had an estimated value of more than $8,000.

According to Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick, the materials budget for the library was extended by 16 percent with the donations.

Book sales coordinated by The Friends of the Library are another way Whitman County Library users benefit from community donations. Last year $2,584 was added to the Friends’ account and used to sponsor library programs. Friends sell items in Troll’s Corner at the Colfax Library, online at sites like Amazon and Once Sold Tales and in a variety of branch locations.

Donated DVDs and CDs must be playable and in their original case. Books must be clean and generally printed within the last five years unless they have some historic or monetary value. Condensed or abridged books and encyclopedias are not accepted. Some branches accept current issues of magazines or magazine subscriptions, depending on space available.
