“Cowboy Show” set for Empire
The Tekoa Empire Theatre will present “The Cowboy Show” Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in Tekoa.
The event will feature musical artists Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band and Judy Coder, along with cowboy poet and author Dave McClure.
“The Cowboy Show” is a musical and comedic program which celebrates the golden age of the American cowboy, surrounded by the history of the northwest.
The Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band from Winthrop will sing, yodel and tell stories. Dave McClure is a working rancher and farmer from Nespelem, Wash., who weaves comedy from real life. Judy Coder is a recording artist from Kansas.
Kriehn and frends to play at Dahmen
Richard Kriehn and friends, Dave Snider and Tim Williams, will perform at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Sunday, March 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. The concert will feature Kriehn on the mandolin, and also includes the fiddle, bass, guitar and harmonica, playing Brazilian, jazz, bluegrass, folk and swing. They will play some originals along with some obscure cover tunes. The cost is $10 at the door. Come early for good seating.
Kriehn was an instructor and advisor, for the WSU School of Music. He and his family are planning a move to Minnesota this spring. He has performed with the Washington-Idaho Symphony, Arkansas Symphony, Alabama Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, Nashville Chamber Orchestra and has toured the United States, Canada and Japan with Nashville recording artists Michael Peterson, Aaron Tippin and Travis Tritt. While touring and living in Nashville, Kriehn was also a member of the bluegrass band 1946, and the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble.
Kriehn has become a regular performer on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, which boasts 3.5 million listeners, every weekend. Richard currently lives in Colton with his wife, Danette, and their three children.
United Arab Emirates report set at library
Colfax area farmer Randy Suess will share stories and pictures from his travels to the United Arab Emirates and the region Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m., in the Norma McGregor room at the Colfax Library.
Hog Heaven band slated at Dahmen
The 16-piece Hog Heaven Big Band will play March 23 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. The band this year will be at Dahmen in March, April, September and October. Admission will be $8 for a couple, $5 for a single.
Dahmen Barn is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Palouse Madness
March Madness, a celebration of crazy sales throughout downtown Palouse and the Grange, will be Saturday, March 16. From original art at the Bank Left to antiques, gifts, food and everything crazy will be offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A luncheon will be at The Bank Left Bistro from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS
Hospital Auxiliary
Whitman Hospital Auxiliary met March 4 in the administration annex. Administrator Debbie Glass reported on some construction that will be done to the old portion of the hospital that was built in 1968. Several upgrades are going to be done in that area.
Blue Bird Gift Shop has been updated for spring. Several auxiliary members worked to get new items displayed. There are many new things and patrons are encouraged to come and see the clothing, jewelry, gift ideas and Easter decorations.
Mayfest committees gave reports for the upcoming festival May 9 in the gymnasium of the Baptist Church. Plants, books, new and nearly-new items, garden plants and flowers are going to be available.
P.E.O.
Chapter AF met March 11 at 7 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Joann Wood hosting. Sixteen members responded to roll call by telling the group about their first job after high school graduation. Quite varied responses were heard.
An invitation was read for the P.E.O. S.E. Reciprocity meeting to be held at the Pataha Flour Mill at Pomeroy April 13.
Washington State P.E.O. convention will be May 31 - June 2 in Seattle. Robyn Johnson is the delegate. Diane Solbrack will be the alternate.
An amount was voted on for the annual scholarship award to be presented to a graduating senior girl. Election and installation of officers for the 2013-2014 term was completed.
New officers are: Robyn Johnson, president; Teri Heilsberg, vice president; Karen Groom, recording secretary; Marsha Binder, corresponding secretary; Diane Solbrack, treasurer; Shirley Richardson, chaplain, and Jill Nelson, guard.
Next meeting will be March 25 at The Courtyard with Leona Herman hostess and Shirley Richardson co-hostess.
Kamiakin Scout district
The annual first aid meet sponsored by the Chief Kamiakin District was last Wednesday, March 6, at Lincoln Middle School. Approximately 90 boy scouts and girl scouts from Latah and Whitman counties participated.
The event involved a written exam and five practical stations which simulated various medical emergencies. Patrols from Pullman Troop 460 finished first and second with a patrol from Moscow Troop 358 placing third. The WSU AGTM Club, Alpha Phi Sorority, Whitman County Fire District Explorer Post, and the Pullman Fire Department provided support for the practical stations. The chairperson for the event was Mike Heston assisted by Brad Cook.
Palouse Patchers
The 33rd annual “Lattice Fantasy” quilt show sponsored by the Palouse Patchers will be April 20-21 at the Latah County Fairgrounds extension building in Moscow. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 20, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 21.
More than 150 quilts will be on display along with vendors and refreshments. Admission will be $5 for adults, $3 for seniors or children under 10.
Garfield-Palouse FFA
Members attended the sub-district leadership competition in Asotin. The rituals team of Rebecca Cochran, Foster Marcus-Nelson, Holly Brown, Kent Nelson, Ian Neibergs and Sierra Hoffman placed third. Team alternates were Delaney Watkins and Katie Holbrook. Creed speakers Holly Brown and Rebecca Cochran placed third and fourth; beginning parliamentary procedure of Hunter Woltering, Libby Akin, Mckenzie Wells, Karra Teare, Lexi Rodriguez, Mckenzie McClanahan and alternate Mitch Jamison placed second.
Advanced parliamentary procedure placed second with Cassie Thompson, Holly Leendertsen, Katryna Newman, Chandler Pfaff, Sarah Wilson and Sammi Johnson.
Prepared speakers Chandler Pfaff placed second and Sarah Wilson fourth to qualify for districts.
The ag mechanic team won the third place banner at Walla Walla with Riley Hodges, Mitch Jamison, Gabe Cocking, Jacob Arlt and Zach Kuehner.

Morgan grandgirl born
A daughter, Audrey Rachel, was born Jan. 25, 2013, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, to Ben and Rachel Kovanda of Pullman. Maternal grandparents are Alan and Cathy Morgan, Colfax. Paternal grandparents are Kerry and Nadeen Kovanda, Columbus, Mont. Maternal great-grandparents are Marshall and Lucile Miller and David and Virginia Morgan, all of Colfax. Weighing six pounds, 10 ounces at birth, she joins a sister Kayla Grace Kovanda.
