Bulldog softball team wraps league at 9-3

Colfax softball team finished their league run Saturday with a split against the Liberty Lancers at Spangle. The split left the Bulldogs with a 9-3 league record and number two in the league behind the Northwest Christian’s power team which remained undefeated with two games left at mid-week.

Colfax booked the split at Spangle after two power wins last Thursday over Davenport at McDonald field with Rachel Robinson marking her own celebration of senior day with a 6-8 day at the plate to knock in eight runs.

Saturday at Spangle the Bulldogs took the first game with a 7-4 win with Robinson tagging a homer in the top of the seventh to squelch a rally by the Lancers.

Colfax had a 5-4 lead going into the seventh when Robinson, who had fanned in her three previous at-bats, clubbed the homer to bump the lead to 7-4.

The Lancers came back in the bottom of the seventh to put two runners on the bags. Colfax pitcher Erica Eng struck out two batters and got out of the inning when the last Lancer batter hit a grounder to shortstop and the Bulldogs booked a force play at second for the last out. Eng allowed five hits and struck out four batters.

Lancer pitcher Jordan Solliday sustained the loss despite striking out 13 Colfax batters in the opener.

In the second game the hosts scored four runs in the first inning, and Colfax was unable to battle out of the hole. Final score was 6-5 for the Lancers who became the only NE team besides NWC to peg a league win over Colfax.

Colfax hitters in the first game against Liberty were Kori Goodwin, two singles; Robinson, homer; Sarah Appel, single and double; Kasey Cloaninger, and Eng singles.

Hits for the Bulldogs in the second game were Goodwin, double and single; Robinson, Andra Hamilton and Eng, each two singles; and Carolyn Knaack, single.

Last Thursday at McDonald Park, the Bulldogs dropped Davenport 27-4 and 14-4 in games shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

Eng allowed the Gorillas nine hits in the first game and six hits in the second game. Colfax opened the double bill with 12 runs in the first inning. The Bulldog offense hammered 24 hits in the second game.

Robinson’s six hits on her solo senior day included a double and two triples in the first game and two singles and the homer in the second game.

Coach Terry Eng said as far as he knows Robinson is the third Colfax player to hit a homer on the McDonald field.

Colfax plans to travel to Moscow April 29 for a non-league makeup game with the Bears. They will return to McDonald May 3 for a home non-leaguer with Waitsburg/Prescott.

First league playoff round will be here May 7 with the NE third and fourth place teams featured in the first game. The winner will play Colfax for a seeding game among the top four NE qualifiers for the next round May 14 at the Merkel complex next to Albi Stadium in Spokane.
