In the eighth inning Tuesday night, with runners on second and third and the score tied 6-6, the Spartans had a freshman at the plate.

With one out, Matt Chittendon hit a single up the middle and Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia beat Colton 7-6.

“He’s just slowly improving,” said T.O.R. coach Kevin Young. “He got a chance to play tonight and made the most of it.”

In a game that was close all the way, Chittendon led the Spartans, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs while Brock Shelton went 2 for 4 as well. Craig Nelson added an RBI double and Clay Shelton hit a solo home run.

Dylan Garrison pitched for the Spartans in the first five innings, allowing four hits and four walks with six strikeouts. Ryan Maley then came in to throw the last three innings, allowing three hits and three walks with one strikeout.

“This was a good win for us,” said Young. “It kind of put us on the right track going into our last six league games.”

The Spartans now move on to play three doubleheaders starting Saturday at DeSales. The following are against Dayton and Tri-Cities Prep.

“We’re hoping we can take the way we played tonight into our last league games,” Young said.
