Spartans aim for fourth-place in District 9

The Spartans of Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia lined up two doubleheaders this week and came out with two solid wins and two solid losses.

At home Tuesday night, the Spartans beat Dayton 5-2 and 13-1 after traveling to DeSales on Saturday.

In Walla Walla, the Spartans went down 18-1 and 10-0.

“We got hammered,” said Spartans coach Kevin Young. “In defense of my players, DeSales is that good.”

In the first game at Walla Walla, Jason Brown and Ty Mundt had the only hits while T.O.R. had eight strikeouts. In the second game, T.O.R. struck out 14 times and Ryan Maley had their one hit.

In the second game, the Spartans trailed 3-0 in the fourth inning when DeSales scored five runs to open up the victory.

Back at home Tuesday night, Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia hosted Dayton and won both games of the doubleheader.

In game one, Maley, Craig Nelson and Jason Brown all hit doubles while Brown had two RBIs as well.

Up against strong pitching from Dayton, the Spartans had to work.

“My key was, we needed to beat (this pitcher) to get to the second game,” said Young.

In the top of the sixth, with the Spartans up 5-1, Dayton loaded the bases and scored a run.

Now up 5-2, Young sent Micah Pittsley into relieve Dylan Garrison on the mound. Pittsey finished out the inning then went one, two, three in the seventh to seal the game.

All told, Pittsley threw one and two-thirds innings to give up no hits, no walks and no runs.

Garrison threw five and one-third innings to allow six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Pittsley took the mound again for the second game and started a 13-1 win.

He went three innings to give up one run on two hits and two walks. Ryan Maley pitched the last two innings, allowing two hits and a walk.

Maley also led T.O.R. in hitting, going 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Craig Nelson went 2 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs while Josh Roe went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs.

“Things cooked a little better in this game,” Young said.

The Spartans are now 9-9 on the year for fifth-place in District 9 2B league standings. DeSales holds first, with Asotin in second, Waitsburg-Prescott in third and Tri-Cities Prep fourth.

T.O.R. will play next at Rosalia Saturday in a doubleheader vs. Tri-Cities Prep. The games will decide fourth and fifth place in league.

“It’s kind of nice to be in a position to play for something on the last weekend,” said Young.

Playoffs will begin next Tuesday, May 7, in which the third through sixth-place teams will contend for a final spot in regionals.
