Young Vikings miss 1B baseball playoffs

In a key doubleheader to potentially keep their season alive Saturday, the Gar-Pal baseball team went down twice to Pomeroy.

Then, on Tuesday, they traveled to their field and got two redeeming wins.

Nonetheless, their season will end May 4 in a non-league game against St. Michael’s of Spokane.

“We did get some revenge on Pomeroy. Unfortunately we lost the ones that counted,” said Gar-Pal coach Jeremy Kimble. “We needed at least one on Saturday to stay alive.”

In the doubleheader’s first game, playing at Garfield, the Vikings had the bases loaded trailing 5-4 when Pomeroy made a diving catch in the outfield to end the game.

Wyatt Mitchell led Gar-Pal batters with a double while, on the mound, Jesse Lopez pitched seven innings to allow five runs on five hits, eight strikeouts and three walks.

In the second game, a 13-10 loss, Mitchell went 3 for 4 with an RBI while Wyatt Griner, Cole Sanderson and Anthony Floyd all had two hits.

On the mound, Kaleb Shaub threw for six innings to give up 11 runs on 11 hits, three strikeouts and 10 walks.

“We had some chances in the later innings of the game,” said Kimble. ”Something just seemed off on Saturday.”

Back on the field Tuesday night, this time to play Pomeroy on the road, Griner went 3 for 3 in both games.

He also pitched in the first game, a 9-4 win, giving up four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

“He had quite a day,” said Kimble.

In addition, Shaub and Mitchell both had two hits in the first win.

In game two, Ian Neibergs contributed two hits as Gar-Pal won 11-8.

Mitchell pitched for four and one-thirds innings to allow eight runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Shaub came in and threw the final two outs to get the save. He allowed no hits with no strikeouts and one walk.

The two wins increased their overall record to 7-11 on the season.

This week will mark the end of the Gar-Pal baseball careers of seniors Mitchell and Anthony Floyd.

The Vikings’ young roster of 10 freshmen and sophomores will look to improve next year.

“I think the future of is bright for Viking baseball,” Kimble said.
