Candidate filing open for towns, schools, board

Filings for approximately 150 seats on town councils, schools, fire districts, hospital districts, cemetery districts, park and recreation boards, opened this week.

Candidates can file either with the Secretary of State or the county auditor’s office in Colfax. Deadline for filing is Friday, May 17, at 5 p.m.

Local filing can be made through the Secretary of State’s web site with payments made via charge cards. The local filings at the state office are relayed daily to the Whitman County elections office for certification.

The lone county office up for election is the Port of Whitman commission seat held by John E. Love of Garfield for District One which covers most of the north and northeast parts of the county. Port district seats coincide with the commissioner district seats. Terms for port commissioners are for six years.

Open seats in the county this year include seven incumbent mayors. Three mayors who already filed for re-election as of Tuesday are Ted Maxwell of Malden, Dennis Palmer of Oakesdale and Dave Jacobs of Uniontown.

Other mayoral seats up for election are those held by Ronald Dugan of Farmington, Jared Pfaff of Garfield, Randy Camp of LaCrosse and Jim Stenhouse of Rosalia. The LaCrosse office is actually listed to Larry (Butch) Burgess who stepped aside last week after Camp was appointed.

The office holders listed below are derived from the county auditor’s records. Local entities are requested to update their rosters prior to the filing period, but some changes could have been made in recent weeks.
