The United States Supreme Court has struck down Arizona’s voter registration law.

Citing Federal precedence, the court declared the requirement that people registering to vote must show proof of citizenship is unconstitutional.

The court’s majority determination, backed by both liberal and conservative judges in a 7-2 decision, said the Arizona law goes too far in restricting voter access.

It has long been a national goal that all citizens have access to voting. Many roadblocks over the years have been placed in the way of some voters. Voter suppression has been a bane on our history. Property ownership, race, literacy and gender have been the most famous roadblocks.

The goal must be to give all citizens access to the polls.

People who are not citizens, however, have no rights in this regard.

It is the American public that needs protection when it comes to voting. Citizens need to be protected from non-citizens participating in elections.

Allowing only citizens to vote is not suppression of the vote. It is protection of the vote.

The Arizona law may have been flawed, but its intent is not. The right to vote is too precious to toss around like candy at a parade.
