CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Fourteen members answered roll call at the June 10 meeting of the Thrifty Grandmothers. The scholarship committee reported nine $750 scholarships were awarded to nine students, Christopher Appel, Amelie Bruya, Casey Hall, Rachel Napier, Sidney Huber, Joshua Huber, all of Colfax; CeJae Miller of St. John-Endicott; Justin Wargo of LaCrosse, and Katelyn Renstrom of Garfield-Palouse.

Thrifty Grandmothers will once again be seen walking in the Relay for Life July 12.

The group voted to give $500 to Friends of the Palouse HIV Consortium, $800 for the Kid’s Carnival at the Concrete River Days to be at Eells Park, $500 for repairs on the Kiddy Pool in Colfax, $500 for Boy Scout Eagle Projects and $300 to Palouse Area Therapeutic Horsemanship Program.

Alice Allenbaugh and Ann Emerson were welcomed as new members. Next meeting will be a lunch at Eddy’s on July 8 at noon.

Order of Eastern Star

At the March meeting the Malden chapter 149 elected Lorna Burns worthy matron and Greg Burns as worthy patron as well as a full slate of officers to begin a new year.

Malden 149 chapter worthy matron last year was Marita Bothman and worthy patron was Hollis Jamison. Several members were honored with Grand Chapter appointments.

In May the chapter honored Marita Bothman for her service as East Side Chairman of the Deputy Instructors. October was Honor Night for Deputy Instructor June Crow and November the Honor Night was for Greg Burns, Grand Representative of British Columbia and Yukon in Washington. Then in February the chapter was visited by Acting Grand Chaplain Marilyn Shaffer who appointed a surprised Lynda Jamison to the Grand Representative position continuing Greg’s jurisdiction.

Every month brought something special. The chapter hosted the SE Washington Past Matrons and Patrons, cooked supper for the Trail Riders, Malden Lodge #188 celebrated its 100th anniversary and the chapter served a prime rib dinner. Malden Lodge had its district meeting in March and the Eastern Star served the noon meal.

Eastern Star is a charitable organization. This year it donated to the WGM charity project–leukemia and lymphoma society and WGP’s charity–elevator repair drive, Estarl, Rainbow Girls, Job’s Daughters and the “big” one, $1,500 for the Malden Masonic Hall residing project and $3,165 to them from generous club donations. The hall looks great with the new siding, paint and repairs.
