Kolten Cole June 21 graduated from basic training at the National Infantry Museum where he got to march across the field made up of patches of grass taken from every battle involving US soldiers. His mom, Shelley Cole, and aunt, Debbie Halterman, attended.
After 13 months of a process to be accepted by the Army because of all the medical paperwork he had to provide due to his childhood asthma and bad knees, he was sworn in to the Army Jan. 3. Kolten chose infantry and March 5 flew to Fort Benning, Ga., for basic training.
Training started March 15, and Kolten achieved many accolades including shooting expert with a M4 and qualified expert in mortar training. He completed the grueling final 12 mile march called Honor Hill. Kolten started out carrying more than 100 pounds of gear but when a fellow soldier was struggling, he stopped to put him over his shoulder and ended up carrying him to their final destination. He was voted “Most Bad Ass” by his fellow soldiers in 3rd Platoon.
He reported to duty July 1 at Fort Riley, Kan., and will most likely be shipped out in September to either Afghanistan or Africa.
Kolten’s grandparents are Bob and Tina Cole and Jeanne Murray, St. John. Great-grandparents are Don and Alva May Jordan, St. John.
