Zornes tourney posts winners

The sixth annual Peter Zornes Memorial Golf tournament was Saturday, June 22, at the Colfax Golf Club.

The tournament, which benefits the Peter A. Zornes Memorial Neuroscience Scholarship at Washington State University, drew more than 50 golfers from as far away as Boise and Portland. Participants enjoyed an 18-hole scramble along with a full menu of side events, including putting, chipping and longest drive contests, a $100,000 Shoot-Out and the Golf Pentathlon, which asked golfers to try their hand at a variety of unorthodox golf shots.

With a low score of 48, the winner of the Scramble and the 2013 Champion’s Hats went to the team from PNW which consisted of Dustin DeFord, Ben Andrus, John Cook and Craig Gilchrist. Last year’s champs, Jake Stewart, Kelly Stewart, Wade Winegardner and Alex Gordon, took runner-up honors, posting a score of 52.

Putting champ for the day was Dennis Pfaff of Oakesdale, and the chipping contest was won by Austin Mudd of Black Diamond. Longest drive winner for men was Jason Gunderson, Portland, and for women was Nicole Malm of Troy.

The $100,000 shoot-out qualifiers were Holly Berquam, Craig Gilchrist, Jason Gunderson, Wade Winegardner and Alex Gordon. Each took one shot from 165 yards, attempting to earn a Hole-In-One and the big cash prize. Nobody landed “in the money.”

The day was concluded with a silent auction, dinner by Smokey Mountain Pizzeria Grill and the drawing for the Palm Springs vacation. The lucky winner of the five-night stay for two at the Oasis Resort in Palm Springs was Holly Berquam, former teacher of Peter Zornes, and an avid golfer, now living in Spokane.

Special guest, Steve Simasko, WSU professor and chairman of the neuroscience department, spoke about the significant impact of the tournament and the scholarship, remembering Peter as a valued student and friend.

Peter Zornes, son of Tom and Kathy Zornes, grew up in Oakesdale and earned a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from WSU. He was in the process of applying to medical school when he became a homicide victim in Pullman in 2005 at the age of 25.

The scholarship was established to help ensure that he could still have an impact in this area of study that he felt was so important. It is awarded to declared majors in neuroscience who demonstrate the qualities of compassion, commitment and community, which were paramount to Peter’s lifestyle. To date, seven outstanding students have received recognition and financial assistance through this scholarship.
