Commission okays evac plan

County commissioners Monday adopted a plan for employees and visitors to evacuate county buildings in case of an emergency.

The policy calls for safe and orderly evacuation using the most safe and direct routes and developing a “buddy system” within each office or work area where two employees are responsible for each other if there is an emergency.

Employees also are responsible for the safe evacuation of visitors.

After evacuating the building, all employees are instructed to meet at the Baptist church for roll call to make sure everyone is out of the building.

Commissioners also discussed the recommendation the safety committee had made last month about security within the courthouse.

They want to discuss the safety concerns and risks with Sheriff Brett Myers. They are concerned with the costs of adding metal detectors and additional personnel to courthouse entrances, and questioned whether security personnel should be deputies or reserve deputies.

Commissioners decided to address their concerns back to the safety committee and ask the committee to investigate funding for their proposed security projects.
