Harvest photos from a century or more ago often include a picture of the cook shack with several hard-working women inside. This portable kitchen was pulled by a team of horses from field to field to provide lunch and snacks during long harvest days.
Often a younger son was assigned the job of ferrying water and supplies to the women as they turned out huge lunches plus snacks at quartering time. The horses or mules pulling the equipment needed a break at mid-morning, lunchtime, and mid-afternoon to rest, drink water and eat oats, and the humans needed breaks, too.
