Serving Whitman County since 1877
Backyard Harvest will distribute fresh community grown produce directly to those in need every Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church community garden.
Backyard Harvest partnered this year with Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax to transform an empty parking lot into a community garden. Eight community garden partnerships have been created across Whitman and Latah counties this year.
Backyard Harvest typically distributes the produce harvested from these plots to food banks and senior meal programs. However, in an effort to keep Colfax grown produce local they will distribute produce directly to the public every Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. until the end of September.
The Peace Lutheran Church community garden is located on N Lake St. The garden broke ground on June 17 and boasts six raised beds, five tractor tire beds and nine potato towers. The garden is currently producing bell peppers, tomatoes and summer squash. Beets, turnips, carrots, radishes, greens and winter squash are expected to be harvested within the month.
Backyard Harvest delivers fresh, healthy, local produce to low-income residents across the Palouse and the LC Valley by gathering extra produce from gardens and farms to distribute to food banks and senior meal sites.
It also harvests unwanted fruit from the community’s many fruit trees and provides the “Shop the Market” program, which allows food stamps to be used at the Moscow Farmers Market, Moscow Food Co-op’s Tuesday Growers Market and the Pullman Farmers Market.
