Sculpture naming contest underway

The National Endowment for the Arts funded two public art projects for the Uniontown Community Development Association to be located near highway 195 at the north and south entries to the town.

Both art pieces have been designed and built by metal artist John Bergen of Lewiston, the creator of the metal jumping fish at the east entry to Clarkston.

Working with Julie Hartwig from UCDA and Artisans at the Dahmen Barn, along with some local farmers, enough metal parts from old farm equipment were gathered to make a tractor pulling a wagon for the south end of Uniontown and a larger-than-life cow to be installed in the field across from the Dahmen Barn.

Use of these parts celebrates Uniontown’s farming roots and will remind viewers that the Dahmen Barn was built for use as a commercial dairy operation.

Both sculptures are very near completion and UCDA is kicking off the “Name the Cow Sculpture Contest” at the Dahmen Barn’s 7th annual fall event, “An Old Fashioned Sunday in Autumn” on Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ideas for names must be submitted at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn that day or until Sept. 30. Junette Dahmen, donor of the barn, will select her favorite name and the winner will enjoy an ice cream prize.
