Zoning hearing set for Pullman worship center

If permits are approved, an Ashram Temple Worship Center will be built at 441 Country Club Road in Pullman.

According to Whitman County Planner Alan Thomson, the 1,200-square-foot residence would contain two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen, along with a 5,400-square-foot common area that can hold between 40 to 50 people.

The center will be for the East Indian Hindu religion, which has a guru as its leader, according to Thomson.

The project will be considered for a conditional use permit at a public hearing Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Public Service Building auditorium in Colfax. The county has issued a notice of determination of nonsignificance under the State Environmental Policy Act.

The residence would be for family members or worshipers who want to stay at the center. The center also will have a community garden.

People can submit written comments on the proposed zoning action to the county planning office before Sept. 30 at 4 p.m., and are welcome to attend the hearing.

Thomson said notice about the hearing will be sent to landowners within 300 feet of the proposed worship center and all other residences which might be affected.
