Colfax roars past Northwest Christian

Colfax football fortunes advanced to 1-1 Friday when the Bulldogs bagged a runaway win over the new Northwest Christian Crusaders team on the Schmuck Park turf.

The Bulldogs exploded for 20 points in the first quarter on the way to a 51-14 win.

Friday's home win came after Colfax sustained a 38-0 loss in their opener a week earlier at Asotin.

Colfax defense put the clamps on the new NWC team early in the game Friday. The score rolled up to 44-0 before the Crusaders' Ethan Perriah, a sophomore running back who cranked out the most yards for the Colbert club, broke through for a 71 escape and a score in the third quarter.

"We were firing on all cylinders," Coach Mike Morgan commented. He credited the Colfax defense, particularly the front line, with putting the clamps on NWC.

The end result was activation of the Bulldogs reserves and playing time for all Colfax players who had suited up.

"We really didn't get to see much of our starters, because the reserves had a lot of playing time," Morgan said.

In fact, sophomore Tobie Warwick, the jayvee quarterback, had three TDs.

"Tobie had some nice reads, and he just took advantage of them," Morgan commented.

Colfax hit early after Dylan Heister intercepted a Crusader pass on the second play of the game. Cody Fulfs scored the first TD on a six-yard plunger in two plays.

Colfax defenders delivered again when Josh Brown and Kenton Lyman sacked Crusader QB David Olds, and Dylan Hall partially blocked a punt on the next play.

Colfax QB Keith Gfeller hit Dylan Hall for a TD to bump the score to 12-0 with 6:37 left in the first quarter.

Next strike for the defense was an interception by Mark Webber who put the Bulldogs back on offense at the 32-yard line. Cody Fulfs scored again after four plays.

Another kick by Austin Getz put the score at 20-0.

The Crusaders picked up a first down on a run by Perriah in the next series but again had to punt.

Getz opened the second quarter scoring for the Bulldogs by taking a NWC punt 61 yards down the Colfax sideline to bump the lead to 26-0.

Warwick scored his first TD on a short gain on a fourth-down keeper with 2:10 left in the half.

After the break, sophomore Reggie Jones hit a 36-yard run, and Warwick shook loose for a 40-yard TD to advance the score to 44-0.

Game officials put the clock on running time with Perriah scoring the first TD for NWC. Their second score was a pass play from Olds to Jerry Sanders, the 6’4” senior who scored NWC's first ever TD last week against Liberty.

Morgan said the Bulldogs rolled up more than 300 yards on the ground in the home opener. Passing total was 50 yards.

The Bulldogs Friday will hit the road for Springdale where they will play a 0-2 Chargers team.

"Springdale always plays tough at home. They like to come at you with their power-I offense," Morgan said.

The Chargers last week sustained a 14-54 loss to Davenport in their league opener. Their first loss was to Oroville in a non-league.

Coach Rick Johnson's team is keyed by quarterback Josh Anderson. Abe Followwill is the top running back for the Chargers.

Other league scores; Reardan 48-Liberty 18, Lind/Ritzville/Sprague 43-Kittitas 6.
