Port gets “very clean” audit

The Port of Whitman County received a clean audit on Sept. 27.

According to the state Auditor’s Office, port records were examined and determined to be in compliance.

“This was a very clean audit with only minor recommendations,” Debbie Snell, port properties and development manager, said.

The accountabilty audit recommended that executive sessions, which can’t be attended by the public, be announced according to subjects allowed by state open meetings law. It also said the port should develop a plan to ensure tenant insurance documents are current.

The single audit, which examines federal grants and how they are spent, recommended that the port make a plan that all certified payrolls are accounted for in port files and that reimbursement reporting be reviewed and approved before submission to a granting agency. Snell said she believes that either signatures or initials must be on requests in order to satisfy the recommendation.

“That’s why you have an audit, so you can learn,” Snell said.
