St. John-Endicott Eagles bow to Pomeroy, 26-16

Their season record is all even at 2-2 for the St. John-Endicott Eagles after a 26-16 loss at Pomeroy last Friday.

Playing in rain for most of three quarters, S.J.E. scored first with a 65-yard run from Wade West.

He later scored on a 78-yard kickoff return. The Eagles led 16-12 at halftime before Pomeroy scored on a 40-yard drive followed by a 60-yard run up the middle for the go-ahead touchdown with six minutes left in the game.

Soon after, the Eagles’ sophomore quarterback Weston Whinery went down with a concussion.

S.J.E. Coach Steve Selk then moved West from running back to quarterback and put Dakota Gehring in West’s place.

The Eagles weren’t able to score again.

All told, there were seven fumbles in the game, including four for S.J.E.

“Those aren’t the ones that we recovered,” Selk said. The Eagles also had two interceptions.

West led the offense with 150 yards rushing on 22 carries with two touchdowns. Wilson Lundberg had nine carries for 73 yards.

“We couldn’t do anything through the air,” Selk said, crediting Pomeroy’s pass rush.

S.J.E. also was playing without starting center Alex White, a senior who broke his leg in two places against Northport Sept. 20.

Selk credited the defense with a good night, recording six sacks.

“Our defense really stepped it up a notch,” said the coach.

Selk indicated there is a chance White will be back to play by the end of the season. As far as quarterback, Whinery will not play this week against Touchet at home. Selk said on Tuesday that he hadn’t decided yet who will take Whinery’s place.
