Cross-country teams aim at state berths

High school cross country teams for WIAA districts 6, 7 and 9 will converge at Plante’s Ferry Park in the Spokane Valley Saturday for a regional qualification meet.

Top qualifiers will get a ticket to the state all-B race the following Saturday at Sun Willows golf course in Pasco.

The regional run for teams in both the 1B and 2B divisions will offer state entries to the top four teams and the top 20 individual finishers on the girls’ side.

The top five boys teams and the top 30 individual finishers qualify for the boys race.

St. John girls will head for the regional after taking a race hosted by Tri-Cities Prep last Wednesday on the Big Cross course at Pasco. The race again featured a battle between the Eagles and Asotin with SJE taking the win on 34 points.

Asotin, which had one runner out of their lineup, finished at 43, TCP at 46, and Pomeroy at 115.

Lucy Eggelston of Asotin again cruised to a win in the girls race with a 19:42.68, with Jordan Porubek of the Eagles second at 19:46.38. Heather Seigel was also part of the SE 1-2-3 mode for girls with 20:18.5.

Also placing for SJE were Shania Bailey, fifth at 20:35.58, Jade Porubek, 10th at 22:33.29, Sami Bailey, 19th at 23.51; and Annie Bailey, 25th at 25:12.71.

Colfax boys will head for district after competing in the NE district meet Saturday at Audubon Park in Spokane. St. George’s Hunter Olsen won the race in 16.16, and Northwest Christian took team honors with a 42 score.

Colfax was topped by Tim Cornelius who placed 40th at 20:03.67. Doug Wilson finished 67th at 24:00, and Thuc Nguyen finished 74th at 31.21.
