The independent Rosalia Spartans look to the playoffs this week after finishing their regular season with a 38-22 win over King’s Lake Christian.
Playing on Saturday at home in the wind for a fill-in game (to take place of a cancelled game against Joseph, Ore.), the Spartans’ senior Craig Nelson ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Clay Shelton carried 11 times for 121 yards and a touchdown while Anthony Riley scored on a 60-yard fumble recovery and run.
In addition, Eli Richardson scored with a tackle in the endzone for a safety.
"We’ve been working on things in practice and a lot of kids did a really good job of transforming practice to a game," said Rosalia coach Kaleb Madison.
Rosalia (6-2) now prepares for a play-in game for the No. 4 seed in the District 9 1B playoffs.
It will be played Tuesday night at Gar-Pal, if the Vikings beat winless LaCrosse-Washtucna Friday night.
"The main goal of the season, obviously you want to make the playoffs,” said Madison. “It’s all about getting that playoff berth and peaking at the right time."
He had a certain message for his team as well.
"Some of you seniors," he told them. "It could be the last time you ever touch a football with pads on again."
