Serving Whitman County since 1877
Gar-Pal and Lacrosse-Washtucna met in Palouse Monday night to decide who would earn a trip to Clarkston for the District 9 1B volleyball tournament. For the loser, their season would end.
After five games, L/W’s season came to a close under the lights in the Gar-Pal gym, 25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15.
After the Tigercats won the first game, Gar-Pal came back to win the second and third.
“Our focus and intensity just wasn’t there (in the first game), specifically our serving,” said Gar-Pal coach Brad Rader. “We picked that up in game two and three.”
In the second game, the Vikings’ Holly Brown racked up multiple kills from the left corner.
“She caught fire, and I just kind of rode my outside,” Rader said, of calling plays from the bench for Brown.
After winning game two, Gar-Pal went on to take game three and build a lead in the fourth.
“It looked like we would finish it in four,” Rader said. “We were looking good. Then we let ‘em back in that game. But I’ll tell you, L/W is one of the most improved teams in the league this year.”
The Tigercats took that fourth game in a comeback before the fifth and final game.
Gar-Pal opened a quick early lead and finally claimed the match and a trip to Clarkston on a kill by Brown, with a set by Chandler Pfaff. The game score was 15-12.
All told, Brown had 13 kills for Gar-Pal on the night while Pfaff had 22 assists and Foster Marcus Nelson had 10 digs.
The win earned the Vikings the No. 5 seed for the district tournament. They were set to start Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. with a first-round match against St. John-Endicott. If they lose, they would play next on Saturday. If they win, they play again right away against No. 1-seed Tekoa-Oakesdale, who has a first-round bye.
