Card payments restored after cyber attack blocked

Although Colfax Rosauers customers were urged not to use credit, debit, EBT or gift cards for a while, use of payment cards now can be resumed at all Rosauers stores.

URM Stores Inc., Monday in a press release announced that it has finished implementing enhanced security measures designed to block the cyber-attack against its payment processing system.

Colfax Rosauers began accepting payment cards again late Monday evening.

“Working with a leading payment card industry security firm, we have taken steps to block the attack,” URM CEO Ray Sprinkle said in the release.

Sprinkle said the company is working with a security company to identify when the cyber-attack began. He assures customers that payment cards are safe to use now.

“We are incredibly grateful to our customers for their patience and understanding. We extend our sincere apologies for the frustration and inconvenience caused by this incident.”

“We are learning from this experience and will continue to constantly look for ways to make our system more secure,” Sprinkle added.

Although the attack has been blocked from continuing, any card used before the attack was blocked could have been accessed and may still be used to make fraudulent purchases.

Customers who used their cards in a store before the attack was blocked should continue to monitor their accounts for unauthorized charges and immediately report any such charges to the bank that issued the card.

URM is working with the security firm, its payment processor and the credit card companies to identify cards that may have been affected by this attack.

After finding signs of the attack, URM devoted all of its efforts to stopping it.

The investigation will now turn toward identifying what stores were affected and for how long. When that occurs, alerts will be sent to the companies that issued cards that might be at risk from the attack. After the companies receive alerts, those companies can apply enhanced monitoring techniques or cancel and reissue the cards to protect their cardholders.

URM is also working with law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.
