Colfax volleyball players ended the championship season by honoring four departing seniors and recalling a net season which probably rates at the top of all Colfax campaigns.
Coach Sue Doering noted the 36-1 campaign to the state title this year rated at the top for her years at the helm of the Bulldogs. Doering also pointed out the 97-8 mark in game wins.
The Bulldogs went undefeated following their one match defeat, to West Valley of Yakima, during the crossover tournament in Spokane Oct. 5.
“It’s really incredible when you look at the competition,” Doering commented.
Another first for the Bulldog program was landing the 2B scholastic award in addition to taking the championship trophy home from the state finals at the SunDome in Yakima.
Among highlights for the title run were three-game wins over Shadle Park and Lakeside. Doering also noted the win over Genesee’s Idaho division title team and the matchup with Tekoa/Oakesdale’s 1B champs.
The four seniors departing the team are Leah Heiner, Cassie Vorderbrueggen, Nicole Sheer and Taylor Larsen. Coach Doering presented the coaches’ award to the foursome for their leadership during the year.
Juniors receiving varsity letters, which included a state title pin and the academic patch, were Alison MacDonald, Rachel Hardie, Kindra Kneale, Kori Goodwin and Amara Huber.
Four sophomores earning varsity awards were Morgan Lord, Katelyn Scholz, Olivia Mellor and Scout Cai.
Larsen, who totaled 73 blocks and 364 kills for the season, was voted for the most valuable player award. Larsen (3.96 grade average) and Sheer (3.93) were co-winners of the scholastic award.
Vorderbrueggen received the most inspirational award. Captains awards went to Sheer, Vorderbrueggen and Larsen.
Co-winners of the most improved honor were juniors Goodwin and Kneale. Doering noted Goodwin had just 33 errors while setting 1,716 times during the season. She also had 38 assists in the four-match run at state.
Kneale cranked up both her blocking and kill skills as the season advanced and became the third power hitter in the Colfax rotation.
The four seniors presented candy awards to the juniors and sophomores. They also presented gifts to the three coaches with Doering receiving an inscribed rock for her garden.
Junior Varsity Coach Shawna Kneale noted her team rolled out a 16-3 record during the fall campaign. She presented awards to Taylor Garcia, a freshman; Sidney Sheer, Kylie Gronning, Ashtyn Aune, sophomores; and Holley Rimbey, junior.
Coach Kneale also presented awards to five players who also saw time on the varsity as swing players. They included Hardie and MacDonald, juniors; Mellor, Lord, and Scholz, sophomores.
The jayvees selected Garcia as most improved; Lord for most inspirational; MacDonald, for most valuable; and Aune and Scholz, for most valuable team mate.
