Colfax girls opened the league run with two power wins over the weekend. They dropped Davenport 49-30 on the road Friday night and then crunched St. Georges in the NE opener on the home court Saturday.
Coach Corey Baerlocher said a big gain for the club in the league start was more power play by the Bulldog bench.
"We'd been a little tentative in our first games and it's good to see our younger players get a little aggressive.”
Sophomore Sidney Sheer came off the bench to hit nine points in the Friday game, and sophomore Scout Cai hit 10 Saturday night at home against the Dragons.
Junior Amara Huber cooked a double-double against the Dragons with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bulldogs Saturday hit a team goal with just 10 turnovers against the Dragons.
In both games over the weekend, Colfax used the press in the first half on defense. Baerlocher noted they opted to use the press after moving away from the tactic in recent seasons.
St. George's Saturday was led by a freshman, Ceci Berquist, who finished with 14 points, including a 6-6 off the toss line.
Colfax has 24 girls turning out for hoops this season, and the coaches will have a challenge in getting game time for all members of the crew.
Springdale arrives at Colfax Friday night after being hammered by Northwest Christian 74-21 in their first league round. The Crusaders are now on a 5-0 run for the new season.
Colfax will go to Reardan Saturday night and play a 1-4 Indians team which was dropped 44-53 by Liberty in the Saturday league round.
