Church women conclude year

Dusty

Country Bible Church’s Women’s Fellowship met for lunch last Wednesday at Events on Main in Colfax. It was their end of the year event. Eight women enjoyed the luncheon. The Fellowship will resume in January. Anyone interested in joining, call Jan Smith or Vicki Broeckel for more information.

Loren Scaggs and Beth Christie returned Monday from a 10-day trip to Florida and the Caribbean. They spent three days in Orlando and then went to Fort Lauderdale where they boarded a cruise ship for a tour of the Caribbean islands. They had a great time snorkeling, riding four-wheelers to tour an island, and thoroughly enjoyed the food aboard ship.

Pastor Steve Szasz of Country Bible Church conducted graveside services at the Dusty Cemetery Saturday afternoon, Dec. 21, for Harold Allen “Curley” Broeckel who died Tuesday, Dec. 17 in The Dalles, Ore. Harold was born April 1, 1931, in Colfax, to Albert and Bertha Ottmar Broeckel. He lived on the family farm near Dusty and attended school in LaCrosse where he graduated in 1949. He moved to Dufur, Ore., in the early 1960s. He married Verlynn Tobie in 1965. They had two children, Keith and Kara, but were divorced in 1996.

He and his family also lived at Fairfield, Athena, Ore; Endicott, Spokane, Latah, Bay City and Tillamook before moving to The Dalles, Ore., where he lived for 12 years in a nursing home. He suffered from Parkinson’s Disease, diabetes and heart issues.

He and his family made many trips to the Dusty area to visit his family and spend time with his children and grandchildren. He loved good food and came from a family of good cooks.

He is survived by two children, Keith (Angela) Broeckel, Woodland, and Kara (Rob) Dightman, Snohomish; their mother, Verlynn Koester; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters, and a sister, Lorraine Scaggs, Colfax.

A gathering at the Parsonage Bed and Breakfast followed the services.
