Serving Whitman County since 1877

Hickman will head Uniontown police

Former Colfax Police Chief Bill Hickman has been named chief of the Uniontown Police Department and will serve in the position 20 hours per month. Also a former Whitman County deputy, Hickman takes over the position vacated by Casey Green, who resigned after three years of service.

Green submitted his resignation in December, saying he felt he was doing a disservice to the town with the shortage of hours he was able to give.

Hickman had worked with Green in the Moscow Police Department, where Hickman was the Code Enforcement Officer after retiring at Colfax in 2012.

“Casey asked if I’d be interested in (the opportunity in Uniontown) and I said yeah,” Hickman said.

A 1976 graduate of Colfax High School, Hickman began as a Whitman County Sheriff’s Deputy in 1992 before joining the Colfax department in 1998.

He said he looks forward to working in Uniontown.

“Being retired you can be just a little picky about where you work,” he said.

As far as the job, he indicated it will be similar to his previous law enforcement work.

“It’s a smaller community, but you deal with the same issues as any smaller community deals with,” he said.

Assisting him will be police officer Michael Melcher, who will also work 20 hours per week. Melcher, who also works as a Whitman County Sheriff’s Deputy, was approved by the city council while Green was still the chief.
