WIAA classifications mark some changes

Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Wednesday announced the proposed division points for sports classifications beginning next year. Colfax will remain in the 2B classification which will include schools with enrollments of 92 to 224.9 students. Listed with 165 students, the Bulldogs will be the third largest school in the NE league.

Two area changes charted for the 2B division is the listing of Kettle Falls with an enrollment of 173 and listing of the new Tekoa/Rosalia combo at 101, which is nine students over the limit for 2B.

Smallest 2B school in the state listed will be Waterville with the 92 minimum. DeSales, with 81, is among five schools who have opted to play in the 2B classification.

Enrollments listed for other schools in the NE 2B division are Northwest Christian at 181, Reardan at 161, Lind/Ritzville/ Sprague at 142, Davenport at 129, and Liberty at 94.

Under the proposal the 2Bs will have the smallest number of schools participating with a count of 59.

Classification for 1B schools will be 26 to 91.9 students. The WIAA divisions are made according to the number of students in the first three grades of high school.

Other proposed division points are 225-471.9 for 1A, 472 to 990.8 for 2A, 990.0 to 1252.3 for 3A and 1252.4+ for 4A.

Enrollments listed for county schools in the 1B division Garfield/Palouse 71, St. John/Endicott 60, LaCrosse/Washtucna /Kahlotus 48 and Colton 45.

Oakesdale, now on its own after the Tekoa/Rosalia merger, was among 11 schools listed as “not counted” in the WIAA report.

The classifications will be finalized by the WIAA executive board Jan. 27. The sports classifications are made at the first of the year to allow time for league scheduling for the upcoming year.
