Schweitzers aid

choral society drive

Beatriz and Edmund Schweitzer have donated $20,000 to the Palouse Choral Society to purchase stage platform risers. Their gift will better enable the choral group to perform major works, such as last year’s production of Haydn’s Creation.

Last July they launched a campaign to raise funds for the purchase the risers. Joanne Sutton and Donna Woolston hosted a garden party in August of 2013 to kick off the campaign. Several designated donations have been received as well as proceeds from the sales of the Palouse Choral Society’s 2012 Messiah CD recording. The new risers will be in place for the May 3-4 performances of JS Bach’s St. John Passion.

“Our community is fortunate to have members like the Schweitzers who value the arts and support it with such generosity,” Director Michael Murphy said.

Tickets for the May concert as well as the Feb. 9 performance of “Ode to Music” are available online:

Creative writing class features local talent

Using the Energy Method techniques from Roberta Allen’s “The Playful Way to Serious Writing,” Cathy Ensley will offer a creative writing class Saturday, Feb. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Colfax Library.

Ensley recently retired from Latah County Library where she led a series of classes for young adults on writing fiction. She has been writing fiction for 20 years and has completed 10 manuscripts, including a historical saga and two novels for young adults.

This will be her first time using the Energy Method with adults. She expects it to be fun and insightful.

Cost for the class is $7. To register for this or a complete lineup of enrichment classes being offered in Colfax, visit:

ON CAMPUS

Jazz Northwest combo sets tribute to Miles Davis

Faculty jazz combo Jazz Northwest will present a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in Kimbrough Concert Hall at Washington State University, part of the School of Music Faculty Artist Series.

Tickets cost $10 general admission, $5 seniors 60 and older and non-WSU students, and free for WSU students with ID. Proceeds will benefit the school’s scholarship fund. Tickets will be available in the lobby 30 minutes before the concert.

The performance will pay tribute to jazz icon Miles Davis, who not only shaped thousands of musicians all over the world but every member of Jazz Northwest. The combo will play tunes that have been influenced by Davis directly or indirectly - not just rehashing what he did but pushing the parameters as he did.

The group will premiere two compositions by Gregory Yasinitsky: “One, two, three,” an up-tempo hard-bop chart, and “Blues for Brecker,”a funk chart dedicated to the late jazz saxophone player and composer Michael Brecker.

Other works will include Brian Ward’s arrangement of “And Sammy Walked In,” a Latin chart by Michel Camilo, and Bradley Ard’s “Staring into Space,” a ballad electronic music style chart.

Featured soloists will include Snider on string bass, Yasinitsky on alto saxophone, Ward on piano, Ard on guitar, David Turnbull on trumpet, David Jarvis on drums and David Hagelganz on tenor saxophone.

The concert is part of the Faculty Artist Series and proceeds support the School of Music scholarship fund. Tickets will be available in the lobby 30 minutes before the performance. The concert is free for WSU students with ID, $10 for general admission and $5 for seniors 60 and older and non-WSU students.

The ensemble is comprised of Julie Anne Wieck (soprano), Lori Wiest (mezzo-soprano), Sheila Kearney Converse (mezzo-soprano), Brian Carter (tenor) and Dean Luethi (baritone).

Accompanying the ensemble will be Elena Panchenko on piano and organ. Shannon Scott, Melissa Rice Perez and Meredith Heinzmann will accompany the group on clarinets and a string quartet consisting of Meredith Arksey, Ruth Boden, Inga Kingsley and Becky Miller will perform.
