Colfax girls marked a league week with one pressure win and one pressure loss in the NE campaign to remain in contention. The Bulldogs are now 7-2 in the league race behind undefeated Northwest Christian.
Tuesday night on the road Colfax bagged a 39-36 win after fighting off a charge by the St. George’s Dragons in the last quarter.
The Dragons, who trailed 21-31 after they scored just four points the third quarter, roared for a 12-1 scoring streak in the top of the last quarter and tied it up at 36-36 with three 3-point shots. Ceeci Berquist hit the last one for the 36-36 tie.
Colfax reclaimed the lead on a bucket by Kori Goodwin with 21 seconds left.The Dragons had three shots in a last gasp effort, but Nicole Sheer grabbed a rebound to get possession of the ball for Colfax. She was fouled and hit one of the toss shots to make it a three-point lead.
Colfax had a 21-17 lead at the half, and held the Dragons to just four points in the third quarter. The home team’s frustrations included a call on the 30-second shot clock in the closing seconds of the quarter.
Saturday night at Ritzville, the Bulldogs rolled into another chapter of last second dramatics with the host Broncos pulling out the 44-43 win.
The Broncos trailed by two beans at the half, but came alive over the last two quarters and carried a 33-25 lead into the last quarter. Colfax battled back, but a three-point shot by Tommi Swannack cracked a four-point lead for the Broncos with 18 seconds left.
Nicole Sheer hit a threebie with six seconds left, but that still left the Broncos with the one-point win.
The Bulldogs other loss in the league, to undefeated NWC, also ended with a one-point margin
Last Friday on their home court, the Bulldogs and Davenport rattled through a close first half and traded baskets for a 12/12 third quarter.
The Gorilla girls faded in the fourth quarter with just five points. One of the setbacks was the loss off Sidney Cole who hit her knee on the court in the third quarter.
Nicole Sheer also led the Bulldogs against Davenport with 13.
