Wonderful

Whitman County has an excellent library system supporting 14 branches throughout the area. Let's help keep it that way and vote to restore 7 cents to its levy rate, returning it to 50 cents per $1,000 of property value. The library has a wonderful staff. They are willing, friendly, and knowledgeable in helping anyone who might need assistance.

Grateful

Whitman County Library depends on tax funding, Friends of the Library, donations, grants and many partnerships to provide the very best in programs and services. As I ask your support for a 7 cent restoration of our levy rate, I’d also like to say how grateful I am to live in a community that values and funds educational opportunities for residents of all ages.

League support

The League of Women Voters of Pullman urges all Whitman County voters to vote yes for Proposition 1 on the February election ballot.

Do you drive on county roads and expect them to be graveled and plowed? Do you expect safe, clean conditions when you eat in restaurants in Whitman County? Do you want timely registration and reliable record keeping for the major events of your life: births, deaths, property transfers, etc.? In a dispute, do you expect to get your day in court in a timely manner? If you find yourself in trouble somewhere in the county do you want the Sheriff’s Department there now? AND, do you expect this ballot, due Feb. 11, to be handled in a secure manner, verified and quickly counted? If so, you use county services and they need to be paid for.

Whitman County Commissioners and elected Department Heads have worked very hard for the past two years to make every penny count and to improve departmental productivity. However, these changes alone cannot keep up with inflation or the tax lids imposed by voters. Proposition 1 asks for an increase of $0.22 bringing the rate to $1.60 per $1,000 of assessed value, a $44 per year increase for a $200,000 home. This small amount should enable the County to keep the services you use every day at their current level.

Please vote yes on Proposition 1 and return your ballot by Feb. 11.

Dissing

I have never seen a reporter so out of touch with reality. I don’t know anyone in the northwest who thinks Richard Sherman is a “classless loudmouth” or “hot-head that we hate.” Nothing could be further from the truth. (Editorial Jan. 23)

Even opposing players describe Sherman as an honest, fun loving guy and have great respect for him as a player and person. Mr. Meyer comes across as totally ignorant of Seahawk football, and just jumping on the bandwagon of knee-jerk reaction to a 20 second sound bite gotten in the heat of battle.

In this age of the world at your fingertips I would hope Mr. Meyer would educate himself on a subject or a person a little bit before putting words in the mouth of his readership. I feel like he owes fans an apology for dissing one of the best men to ever put on a Seahawk uniform. And I mean best both on and off the field.
