Relay for Life kicks off with spaghetti dinner

On Thursday, Jan. 31, Whitman County Relay for Life kicked off its annual fundraiser with a spaghetti dinner at the Colfax Baptist Church.

Although only 35 people were served that evening, organizers termed it a success.

“We were very pleased,” said one of the organizers, Cozy Lueck.

Although they served more people last year, Lueck said they knew other events were going on the same night and didn’t expect as many people.

A new team signed up and a lot of information was distributed to people who attended the dinner, Lueck said.

Whitman County Relay for Life is a fundraiser for services provided to cancer patients. The American Cancer Society provided services to 68 Whitman County patients and caregivers last year. Thanks to funds raised by the relay, local folks were able to take advantage of several services offered by the American Cancer Society.

Three cancer resource centers provided services for 48 Whitman County residents. Four women attended “Look Good, Feel Better” classes. Thirteen wigs, hats, turbans and prosthesis were provided to patients undergoing cancer treatment. One childhood cancer patient and a sibling went to camp. Seven patients received free rooms as they received treatment. And, the American Cancer Society’s information line received 65 calls from Whitman County residents.

The Relay for Life will be July 12-13 at the Colfax High School track.
