Colfax takes fifth; face S.E. play-in foe tonight

Colfax boys finished 1-2 in the last three rounds of the NE finals to remain in the number-five playoff slot. The team needed a win Saturday to extend their season and collected a 52-43 win over Davenport.

They played the Gorillas after being hammered by Liberty 44-31 in the Friday round at Mead. Colfax faced the Lancers after pegging a 1-1 tourney mark by eliminating 53-41 in the Wednesday round at Mead.

In the early game opener Saturday at Mt. Spokane against the Gorillas, Colfax held Davenport to just nine points in the first half. The Bulldogs led by 10 at the break.

After an even third quarter, Davenport made up points in the last quarter, but never closed the gap.

The Gorillas came within seven beans, 43-50 after sophomore Nathan Hopkins came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer, and Wyatt Evers added a bucket.

Colfax was led by Kasey Johnson who finished with 19 points against the Gorillas.

The loss ended Davenport’s season at 7-17.

Friday at Mead the Bulldogs again were downed by the Liberty Lancers who rolled out a 44-31 win at Mead.

The Bulldogs booked a strong first quarter and remained close at the half, but they again had one of their third-quarter derailments on offense and added just two points.

The score after the dry third quarter left the Lancers up by 10 points, 27-17.

Colfax offense kicked into gear in the fourth quarter, but it was too late.

Freshman Danny Robinson led Colfax with 12 of the 31 points.

Clay Fleming topped Liberty with 13 and Match Burnham hit 12.

Colfax faced off with Liberty Friday after bumping Reardan 53-41 in an elimination game last Wednesday.

The Bulldogs hit a 21-17 lead at the half and pegged a strong third quarter to extend the gap to by nine points.

Reardan, which defeated Colfax in a league visit Jan. 18, booked 20 fouls last Wednesday and lost Daniel and Skylar Peone on five-foul counts. Brandon Rubin topped Reardan scoring with 14 points.

Colfax ventures into the next playoff round behind St. George’s, Lind/Ritzville/Sprague, Liberty, and Northwest Christian.

The Dragons stopped LRS 54-45 in the title game at Mt. Spokane to run their record to 23-0. Liberty landed in third place with a 50-44 edge over NWC in the afternoon game.
