Colfax zaps NWC for trophy, faces Broncos for state

Round four of the Colfax-Northwest Christian hoop saga went to the Bulldogs Saturday night with a 50-49 win that stopped the Crusaders’ 25-0 season string.

The win at Mead left the Bulldogs with the SE-NE tourney trophy and the number-one seed in Saturday’s state regional round.

Colfax will go up against the Lind-Ritzville-Sprague Broncos Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cheney High School. The Broncos took the SE-NE number five slot with a 51-34 win over Dayton in the other game at Mead Saturday night.

Colfax zapped NWC in the final six seconds after chasing the Crusaders all the way until they staged a 17-6 charge in the last quarter.

Freshman Taylor Garcia rolled home with the zapper honor after she collected an errant Colfax pass and hit a baseline shot in the final six seconds. The bucket was the lone score for Garcia in the game.

The final Colfax points blast saw Nicole Sheer and Scout Cai, who led the Bulldog scorers, zap four quick points. Cai’s bucket came off a reverse layup.

The final rally came after Crusader scoring locked up at 49 points with two minutes left.

Amara Huber hit two foul shots; Kori Goodwin added a bucket to cut the Crusaders’ lead down to three points, 46-49 with 1:50 left.

Huber then went to the line again for two more plunkers to put it at 48-49 with 42 seconds left.

The Crusaders took the ball down court, but Rachel Bozlee missed a short shot with 20 seconds left. Colfax took the ball with 13.3 on the clock, but they missed the play and the ball went out. NWC took the ball on the Colfax baseline, but Bozlee was called for traveling on the in-bounds.

That gave Colfax the last chance with 6.5 seconds left, and the ball found Garcia on the baseline.

Northwest Christian went into the last quarter after losing team leader Treasure Farmer with 2:40 left in the third quarter. Farmer collided with Garcia at mid court and went down after hitting her head. She spent the rest of the game on the bench.

The Crusaders also lost Bozlee with a leg injury in the first half and Courtney Gray had to sit after a third foul call in the second quarter.

Colfax booked the one-point win after losing both league games to NWC on one-point decisions. When the two league leaders matched up for the district title at Mt. Spokane, the Crusaders won by two points in overtime after Kori Goodwin hit a 3-point shot to tie it up at the end of regulation time.

The number-two finish will send NWC to Ellensburg to play Willapa Valley, the fourth place team from district five at Ellensburg Saturday at 4 p.m.
