Colton girls, Tekoa-Oakesdale advance

Final rounds of the SE girls tourney in Colfax last week ended with the top two teams in the league race collecting the tickets to this week’s ticket s to regional round of 16, the first chapter of the state tournament. Colton’s undefeated Wildcats, who are on the hunt for a record sixth straihgt state title, dispatched Tekoa/Oakesdale 62-28 in the title round Friday night, and the Nighthawks came back Saturday and stopped St. John 54-32 for the other regional ticket.

Colton’s championship win earned a short trip for this week’s regional round. They will play Yakama Tribal at Cheney High school Saturday at 6 p.m Yakama Tribal qualifited for the regional as the number-two team for district five.

Tekoa Oakesdale faces a tough assignment. They have been booked to play Sunnyside Christian, the Yakima district champions. Friday at 6 p.m. at Eisenhower High in Yakima.

The Nighthawk girls will take a 19-4 overall mark into the regional battle with the Knights.

Friday in the SE title game before a packed gym at Colfax, Coach Clark Vining’s Wildcats put down one of their patented first quarter starts with a 17-6 edge over the `hawks. Tekoa/ Oaksedale bounced back in the second frame, but Colton posted 33-17 edge at the break and stacked another 12 points on the gap in the third quarter.

Sharp shooting again boosted Colton. Jenna Moser, who led the `cats with 22, hit four 3-pointers on the night, and Zoe Moser hit three 3-pointers.

Colton’s hustling defense logged 20 fouls in the title game, and the`hawks picked up 12 -23 at the line, not enough to offset the Wildcat shots from the field.

Tekoa/Oakesdale came back Saturday and stopped the SJE Eagles 54-32 for the last regional ticket. Mattie Jo Johnson led the `hawks with 19 poihts in the last round game.

After pegging nine -point lead at the half, the `hawks bombed SJE 16-7 after the break to decide it.

Abby Glorfield led the Eagles with 9 points. They finished out the season with a 14-9 record.

St. John/Endicott advanced to the last game after taking out Rosalia 53-42 in Friday’s consolation final at Colfax.

The two neighbors again waged a close battle with into the last quarter. The Spartans shaved the gap down to three points with 2;22 left, but that turned out to be their last score for the night.

The Eagles finised the 53-42 win on string of toss shots with Sami Bailey Gorfield and Sierra McCanna each hittinig a pair.

Rosalia finished out 11-12 on the season which was the last for for a team which will be part of a combo with Tekoa in the tough NE 2B league next year.

Senor Mackenzie Reddish hit 19 to lead the Sparts in their last game.
