Arsenic Old Lace

slated at Empire

The 1939 gloomy comedy Arsenic and Old Lace will be presented at the Empire Theatre in Tekoa May 10 at 7 p.m. by the Moscow Community Theatre.

The comedy is a period piece with pointed dialogue throughout and wit that is inventive and undated. This gives the play a timeless quality.

At the outset of the play, the audience meets a charming and innocent pair of elderly women who cheerfully poison lonely old men with wine laced with arsenic.

Tickets are $15 per adult, $12 for students and seniors. Tickets may be ordered by calling the box office at (509) 284-2000 or purchased at the door prior to the performance.

Athenaeum

Members met April 18 for the annual guest day. The group is celebrating its 119th anniversary this month, though the days of wearing elaborate hats and white gloves have passed. Members and guests enjoyed a presentation celebrating the lives of women in the early days of Whitman County, which was prepared by Patti Cammack of the Rural Heritage Project. Photos of weddings, family life, work and community involvement illustrated the rich fabric of life over the years and some members of the club recognized photos of their ancestors.

The program concluded with a photo of the campaign for women’s suffrage in 1910. By then the Athenaeum Club was already 15 years old. The club’s spring luncheon will be at Banyan’s May 2 and then the group will adjourn until fall.
