Colton baseball takes two from Liberty Christian

The Colton High School baseball team picked up two close league wins at Liberty Christian April 19.

Tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning of the first game of a doubleheader, back-to-back RBI singles from Levi Weber and Dalton Patchen lifted the Wildcats to a 5-1 win.

In the second game, trailing 4-3 in the seventh inning, Austin Meyer was down to his last strike when he came through with a base hit to keep Colton alive. Two batters later, Jake Straughan hit a triple to make the score 6-4.

Liberty Christian came up for their last at-bat and a double-play soon ended the game.

On the mound for Colton, Straughan pitched the first outing, throwing a complete game to allow three hits and one run, with seven strikeouts and a walk. In the second, Jordan Druffel threw five innings to allow three hits, four runs with four strikeouts and six walks.

Carter Dahmen threw the final two innings, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

At bat in game one, Dahmen went 2 for 4 with two doubles while Austin Meyer scored two runs and Straughan had three RBIs.

Straughan then hit two triples in the second game, for three RBIs while Meyer had two hits and an RBI.

The two wins built their record to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in league.

“We’ve really come around after the 0-4 start,” said Colton coach Pat Doumit. “They’ve played themselves into baseball shape and their mental toughness is where it needs to be.”

The Wildcats are set to play next at home Saturday for a doubleheader against Pomeroy.
