Bulldogs run four wins, claim NE top spot

Colfax senior Patrick Jacobs cranks a pitch Saturday in the Bulldog win over Liberty.

Coach Mike Parrish marks 300th win

Colfax baseball pegged four wins over their last two league foes to nail down the top slot in the NE race. The Bulldogs downed St. George’s 4-1 and 7-1 at McDonald Park Tuesday to finish out their league record at 11-1.

Saturday, they dropped Liberty 9-1 and 5-2 on the home field.

Coach Mike Parrish said the Bulldog are now working to make up a couple of non-league games to keep in tune before the start of playoffs. The NE format calls for a round among the bottom four teams in the league with the top two clubs, Colfax and NWC, waiting to play the survivors. As number-one, Colfax is already guaranteed a slot in the regional round under the format for the second round of the NE playoff.

In Tuesday’s opener, Colfax and St. George’s locked up in a 1-1 tie over four innings before the Bulldogs scored two in the fifth inning to take the lead. Garret Burke started it with a double, and Keith Gfeller singled for the first RBI. Brent Becker then singled to score Gfeller.

Colfax freshman Danny Robinson allowed the Dragons six hits in taking the win. Gfeller had two singles in the first game. Mark Webber and Jeff Davies had the other hits for Colfax.

In the second game, senior pitcher Patrick Jacobs struck out 15 Dragons and gave up just one hit on the way to a 7-1 win.

Erik Muelheims, who started on the Dragons mound, had the lone rap off Jacobs, a double in the sixth inning. Issac Werkman relieved Muelheims in the fourth and Dexter Sienko pitched in the fifth.

Colfax totaled 10 hits with Jacobs and Robinson each tagging a single and a triple. Davies had two singles, and Webber and Gfeller had the other hits.

Saturday at McDonald, Colfax defeated Liberty 9-1 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game.

Liberty scored their lone run in the sixth inning of the first game. Jacobs struck out 14 Lancers before Gfeller went to the mound and struck out five more batters.

Robinson led the 10-hit attack with a double and two singles and Davies had two hits with a double. Webber had two hits and Gfeller and Dustyn Hall had the other hits.

In the second game, Burke had the start and Gfeller came back to the mound in the second inning.

Liberty scored their lone run in the first inning, and the Bulldogs answered with two in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. They scored three more over the fourth and fifth innings.

Colfax totaled 13 hits in the second game with Dylan Heiser tagging three, Austin Getz, Webber, Hall and Burke each tagging two.

Coach Parrish

gets 300th win

Colfax Coach Mike Parrish was honored for marking his 300th career win Tuesday night after two wins over the St. George’s Dragons. Parrish has been varsity baseball coach for the Bulldogs since 1997. He started coaching the Bulldog jayvee team in 1991 after coaching Babe Ruth and Little League teams nine years prior to that.

In addition to rolling up the 300 wins, Parrish also played a lead role in the development of the McDonald Park playing fields.

Colfax’s Mark Webber scrambles to get back to first base Saturday while Maxwell Johnson attempts to make the tag for the Lancers.
