Serving Whitman County since 1877
Port of Whitman County commissioners made their annual inspection at Boyer Park and Marina May 1.
Concessionaires Leo and Terri Haas hosted the commissioners for lunch at the Snake River Bar and Grill and then Leo Haas took them on a tour of the park and marina.
Several new signs guide visitors to different areas of the park.
Twenty-four new trees were planted, replacing nine old trees that were removed because of disease problems and age. Port officials have been working with an arborist who recommended which trees should be removed.
Twenty-four Morton Circle trees replaced the old trees. This type of tree should be hardier and last longer than the previous cottonwood trees at the park.
Primitive cabins will be placed near the park entrance this fall, according to Debbie Snell, port properties and development manager. An application for three cabins was submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Snell said she hopes the cabins can be located at Boyer some time this fall.
The cabins will lack electricity or water service.
Port Commissioner Tom Kammerzell and Haas inspected the docks at the marina during the tour.
Commissioners have begun discussions about replacing docks in the marina. The project, estimated to cost in the range of $2 million, is expected to extend several years because of permits needed from several different government agencies.
Port officials hope to have the first permit for the process complete some time this fall.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will make its annual tour of the park and marina May 16.
