Serving Whitman County since 1877
The annual Garfield May Day celebration returns Saturday with some old favorites and new twists.
One event that is back to conclude the night after years away is the over-21 dance at the American Legion building. Sponsored by the Ladow Grange, it will feature the music of Moscow’s Bare Wires.
Beginning the day’s events will be the Boy Scout breakfast at Garfield Middle School from 6 to 10 a.m. Next will be the Mustache Run, starting at 8 a.m. in Garfield City Park, followed by a silent auction and raffle of a handmade round cutting board donated by M.E.H. Cabinets.
At 10 a.m. vehicles, floats, people and horses line up for the main parade which starts at 11 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m. Garfield queen McKenzie Wells and princess Alexis Rodriguez will receive their crowns before the Kiddie Parade leads into the big parade, which will feature the Lentil Festival princesses, Whitman County Sheriff’s Posse, Oakesdale school band, state legislature representative Joe Schmick and more.
“I’m pretty sure we’ll get a couple more elected officials,” said Connie Kriebel, Secretary of the Garfield Community Association. “It’s that time of year.”
Prizes will be given for the top three costumes in the kiddie parade.
Later, the Palouse Lions Club will serve hamburgers at the City Park from noon to 2 p.m. while the Potlatch Junior Jammers entertain with their fiddles. Craft vendors will display their wares and children’s games will commence with a bouncy castle and 4-in-1 activity set.
At 2:15 p.m. a raffle winner will be announced and auction items will be ready for pickup.
When the sun goes down, members of the Garfield volunteer fire department will set up to staff the dance at the Legion Hall.
“The community asked for it,” said Kriebel of the return of the dance.
Drink tickets will be sold at the door along with entry tickets selling for $6 for individuals or $10 for couples.
“It’s just a fun little day for the community,” said Kriebel. “So come on over.”
