The No. 1-seed Colton High School baseball team began the playoffs with a 7-2 victory over District 7 No. 4 seed Elmira Coulee Hartline Tuesday afternoon.
Playing at Medical Lake, Colton led 4-1 at the end of the second inning and 7-1 at the end of the third.
“Nothing pretty,” said Colton coach Pat Doumit of the Wildcats’ scoring, which came on six bases-loaded walks and an error by the shortstop.
Cody Meyer led Colton at the plate going 2 for 3 while the team posted just five hits.
Jake Straughan pitched for six innings, allowing one hit with 12 strikeouts and six walks. Jordan Druffel came in for the last inning to allow one hit with one strikeout.
“You look back for highlights in that game and nothing jumps out,” said Doumit, whose team left 14 men on base. “The big hit never really came. But we were lucky that we didn’t need it.”
Colton now advances to play Liberty Christian, the No. 2 seed behind the Wildcats in the Southeast 1B league, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at University High School. The game will decide the No. 1 overall seed from the east for the regional tournament.
Dalton Patchen is set to pitch in the game as Straughan rests for the start of regionals.
