Patriots out of Legion race; Colfax, Pullman play in juniors

Summer Legion baseball for county high school players marked a retreat for this summer with the absence of an entry in the Spokane senior league. The Pullman Patriots, who have been the county’s entry in the Spokane league, failed to launch this year with the lack of recruits as the key cause.

Two Junior Legion teams are now in action with the Posse team playing out of Colfax under Wayne Gregory, and the Whitman Cougars based in Pullman and coached by Bryce Jackson, a pitcher on the WSU baseball team from Kennewick.

Gregory’s Posse team defeated Cheney 9-4 Monday night in a non-leaguer at Cheney to advance their record on the new season to 4-1.

The Posse scored eight runs over the first three innings. They drew 10 walks from the Cheney mound and totaled six hits.

Jake Cillay pitched the first five innings for the Posse and Trevor Joirman pitched the last two innings. Cheney batters totaled seven hits in the game.

Posse had six hits with Cillay and Brent Becker each tagging two.

Posse has also defeated Mead twice and booked a split with the Asotin Blues.

The Posse team is slated to play at Colfax tonight at 8 p.m. in the first round of the Palouse Summer Series. They are booked to play Spokane Dodgers. Tonight’s game will follow a series opener this afternoon against the Yakima Beetles at the LCSC field in Lewiston.

The Posse next Tuesday will host the Central Valley team at McDonald Park for a twinbill which will start at 3 p.m.

They are booked to host North Central for two games next Friday, June 20, and Gonzaga Prep for a double Saturday, June 21 starting at 1 p.m

Six Colfax players on the Posse roster are Brent Becker, Jeff Davies, Garrett Burke, Cal Gregory and Dylan Heiser.

Pullman Players on the roster include Tyler Lincoln, Griffin Bashaw, Ryan Vanucci, Josh Hawn, Jake Mendeola and Evan Parks. Colton’s Austin Meyer is also a member of the team.
